Over 12 Million People at No Kings Protests Nationwide
Two things can be true at the same time

Hi folks!
I have recently been MIA on my weekly post schedule due to assisting as an organizer at the Houston 50501 No Kings protest which occurred over the weekend. Plus I was on the local news and more local news! I will be resuming my quite absurd legal posts this week for Tuesday and Thursday per usual.
For now, I would like to briefly tell you what has been happening.
The current White House Administration has violated multiple parts of the U.S. Constitution since January. I have talked about it on social media, on LinkedIn and on Instagram, and you can find updated details from the Impeach Trump Again page.
The current White House Administration has been pushing for no due process which is a major issue for all Americans.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was ordered and has been raiding places of work like farms, restaurants, and hotels looking to arrest undocumented immigrants.
Police militarized in Los Angeles, California (LA) at protests causing injuries and unrest for civilians. The White House deployed National Guard and Marines and forced their way into LA against the California Governor’s wishes.
The White House scheduled a military parade in D.C. on June 14th, the 250th anniversary of the formation of the U.S. Army in the year 1775 and the President’s 79th birthday. The parade cost us about $40 million of our taxpayer dollars.
This has led up to one of the largest nationwide demonstrations in U.S. history protesting the actions of the current White House Administration. 50501 is a nationwide grassroots movement started around January/February from a random reddit post, calling on people to take to the streets and protest on a single date. It is 50 states, 50 protests, 1 movement. It is NOT a non-profit, co-op, or any otherwise legally formed organization, it is merely a group of individuals who all have full-time jobs spending their free time together in an effort to make change.
50501 put together the “Hands Off” protest in collaboration with Indivisible on April 5, 2025, and many more demonstrations throughout time nationwide. 50501 is not centralized so there is a national team who helps smaller leadership teams in their cities organize across the U.S. Which brings me to today…
I have been assisting the organizers of
in an individual capacity, not as an attorney, nor affiliated with Ringo Legal, PLLC or my Substack, Legally Absurd. This is meant to be a purely educational post and food for thought (interested in feedback from our community). There has been some criticism of the protests on Saturday that I cannot completely articulate as I do not entirely understand the concerns. Here is what I mean:
People specify marginalized groups are not being represented, but from my understanding, marginalized groups helped lead the Houston protest on Saturday as organizers and partners with their voices directly on megaphones.
People specify that the unhoused were pushed away from their spot, but unhoused have told organizers that they want to be notified when these protests happen so they can be present, spread the word, and enjoy the access to food and water.
People specify that these protests are not impactful, yet, it has connected people from across the Greater Houston area with the same push for the same arguments, and helped people financially who would not have otherwise had any help (Also donations were gathered at Houston City Hall; about 240 pounds of food to Food Bank, at least 800 pounds to Food Not Bombs + essential items, and about 400 pounds to Meals on Wheels).
Two positive outcomes from No Kings day: Representative Al Green announced at our Houston protest that he would be calling for impeachment again this month. The White House ordered ICE to pull pack on raids of workplaces, despite Trump followers in disagreement of it.
People specify that the organizers are too friendly with police, but HPD identified and protected the protesters from a group of “Proud Boys” before the protest even started, AND protest marshals were present to help the people on the ground even if HPD did not have our backs.
Lastly, people specify that the protests are too “peaceful” and there is a difference between “peaceful” and “non-violent”, yet, peaceful protests are the bridge to bring people together for them to make educated decisions on how else they want to get involved.
People are only seeing the protest and not realizing there is work being done where they choose to not look. I would like to remind folks that two things can be true at the same time; a “peaceful protest” does not mean other forms of protesting cannot exist. A peaceful protest can build community to connect more people with the groups and organizations who are already doing so much on the ground.
The organizers are putting in the work, and they see and hear you. 50501 in Houston is about building community and building it QUICKLY. I strongly encourage anyone who has feedback or criticism of the work by
to join the chats and help build the community in the way that you see fit. The people in the chats often ultimately decide the direction of the events and work that 50501 does.I would love to hear from folks in Houston on what they would like to see and do in the Greater Houston Area! Please leave a comment below or message me.
Best wishes,
~ Ringo
